AFTON – The Welch girls bounced back with a 64-43 victory over Welch here Saturday, Jan. 27.

Afton’s boys rallied for a 47-42 victory to earn a split.

Welch, coming off a tough loss to Ketchum on Friday, Jan. 26, led by only two points after the first quarter, but used a 20-8 advantage in the second to open up some breathing room.

The Lady Wildcats, ranked 17th in Class A (17-2) followed that up with a 17-10 margin in the third.

Afton (6-8) held a 15-14 edge in the final stanza.

Hailey Haskell had 13 points for Welch. She was joined in double figures by Olivia Chenoweth, 12; Aspen Wood, 11, and Olivia Pitcher 10.

Madison Schaper added nine, followed by Madison Gilman with three and Jaeli Jorgenson, Rachel Rife and Jayci Atwood, two each.

Carlee Shinn led the Afton scoring with 12.

Layne Hudson added nine, followed by Skyler Hicks with seven, Quetta Woodall with six, Ashley Kunkel with three and Sid Huddleston, Ashley Turley, Clarissa Rice with two each.

Boys: Afton 47, Welch 42

The Wildcats had led 38-36 heading into the final stanza, but Afton held an 11-4 advantage.

Eight of the Eagles’ 11 points in the fourth quarter came on free throws.

Afton (3-7) was up 10-2 in after the opening frame, but Welch went on a 27-point explosion in the second to take a 29-22 lead at the half.

Nate Beaty got 12 of his team-high 14 points in the second.

The Eagles turned things back around with a 14-9 run then named down the win by outscoring Welch 11-4 over the final

Three players reached double figures for the Eagles, topped by Cole Mikesell with 15

Brett Hollon and Brett Fuser had 14 and 12, respectively.

Others scoring for Afton were Zach Henry with three, Briar Julian with two and Jesse Saylor with one.

Following Beaty in scoring for Welch (6-13) were Trenton Seigel, nine; Braxton Turner, seven; Gunner Johnson, six, and Justin Haskell, Dalton Duede and Montana Price with two each.
