COMMERCE — The Commerce boys held off Afton for a 58-56 victory here Friday, Jan. 26.

The Tigers had led 36-18 at the half, but Afton erupted for 23 points in the third quarter to make things interesting.

A 19-15 advantage over the final eight minutes allowed the Tigers to nail down the win.

“It was 36-18 at the half, then everybody thought they were a 3-point shooter and we had no one in position for offensive rebounds,” CHS coach Terry Tyree Jr. said. “It was not very smart basketball on our part.”

Danny Salinas had a team-high 21 points for the Tigers (10-4).

Lupe Prado and Cruz Munson scored nine each; Hunter Burkybile seven, Carlos Cardenas six, and Bryer Chandler, Chris Ibarra and Ty Jauert contributed two each.

Afton (2-7) had four reach double figures. Briar Julian and Cole Mikesell had 14 each, Brett Fuser netted 11 and Brett Hollon finished with 10 points.

Bailey Forgey and Zach Henry scored four and three, respectively.

Girls: Afton 41, Commerce 11

The Lady Eagles broke a 4-4 tie with a 12-5 burst in the second quarter.

They continued to pull away in the second half with 11-2 and 14-0 runs.

Skyler Hicks netted 20 points and Carlee Shinn chipped in with 12 for Afton (6-7).

Others with points for Afton were Quetta Woodall with six and Ashley Kunkel netted three.

Morgan Friel was the top scorer for Commerce (2-12) with four points.

Marisa Scott followed her with three points and Sunny Crawford and River Friel had two each.
