MIAMI — Kansas jumped out to an early lead and never looked back during a 64-32 win over the Miami girls here Friday, Jan. 5.
The loss was the ninth straight for the Lady Wardogs while Kansas — ranked sixth in Class 3A — improved to 9-1.
The Lady Comets’ only loss was to 3A No. 2 Adair.
A layup by Shelbie Hubbard with 6:04 left in the first quarter pulled the Lady Wardogs to within two points, 6-4.
But Kansas went on an 18-0 run to break the game open.
The Lady Comets went into the half with a 41-10 advantage then carried a 57-23 lead into the final stanza.
Miami put together its only sustained run, a 10-2 spree in the third that included 3-point goals by Bayleigh Beckwith and Abby Osborn.
The Lady Wardogs held a 9-7 edge over the final eight minutes.
Hubbard was the leading scorer for Miami with 15 points.
Others scoring for the Lady Wardogs were Beckwith with five; Mary Gilbert four, Osborn and Malarie Thompson with three each and Rebecca Bell added two.
Four players scored in double figures for Kansas, topped by Aydin Jones and Kaylee Armbrister with 13 each.
Teri Leaf had 12 and Kelsey Guthrie chipped in with 10 for the Lady Comets.
Miami travels to Vinita Tuesday, Jan. 9, and then visits Wagoner on Friday, Jan. 12.
