MIAMI — The second-ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M wrestling team faces a stiff weekend test with a double-dual Friday, Dec. 8, and another open tournament Sunday, Dec. 10.
NEO, which moved up six notches in the latest rankings that were released Monday, hosts No. 6 Northwest Wyoming and Labette (Kansas) Community College Friday.
The Norsemen then will travel to Wichita, Kansas, for the Jet Invitational hosted by Newman University.
“This will be a very big weekend for us,” Norse coach Joe Renfro said. “Northwest Wyoming has a couple tough kids in their line-up and our reaction to making weight and wrestling on Friday and Sunday will be an important task for growth.”
Renfro has split his team up into a Blue and a Gold squad for Friday’s action.
Team Gold is made up of Boo Dryden, 125; Jack Karstetter, 133; Cody Karstetter, 141; Kendon Lee, 149; Zeke Rubio, 157; Wyatt Jordan, 165; Devin Crawl, 174; Alex Kauffman, 184; Gus Boyd, 197, and Brian Andrews, heavyweight.
The roster of Team Blue includes Lantz Woodburn, 125; Mikey Mascarenas, 133; Jory Brumnett, 141; Marqual Graham, 149; Kyle Caldwell and Justin Peterson, 157; Colin Brennan, 165; Carlos Dias, 174; Kole Rollins, 184; Zeke Silva, 197, and Russell Coats, heavyweight.
Northwest and Labette meet in the first dual starting at 4 p.m.
Team Gold will wrestle Northwest and Team Blue faces Labette in duals at 5:30 p.m.
The final action of the night finds Team Blue wrestling Northwest at 7 p.m.
“None of these guys have had to make weight back-to-back yet this year and we’ll see how they respond,” Renfro said. “Wrestling back-to-back during the weekend before finals will put a little stress on their plate.”
Six of the Norsemen who will be wrestling are in the top eight of the NJCAA Wrestling Coaches individual rankings.
Jordan is No. 1 at 165 pounds, Jack Karstetter, fourth at 133; Kauffman, fifth at 184; Dryden, sixth at 125 and Cody Karstetter and Boyd, seventh at 141 and 197, respectively.
Also, Jacob Mintzmyer is third at 174.
