AFTON — With Afton playing in the Class A football state championship game, the final round of the 30th annual Afton Coca-Cola Classic now will be played on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Play was scheduled to wrap up on Friday, Dec. 7, but because of the uncertainty of the Eagles’ status, tournament officials had penciled in Saturday as an alternate date.

The girls’ third-place game will be at 5 p.m. with the boys’ title game following at 6:30 p.m.

The girls’ final will be at 8 p.m.

The tournament begins Monday, Dec. 4 with a pair of round-robin brackets.

The Mounds girls and Kansas boys were winners at last year’s tournament.

Mounds, ranked 13th in Class 2A, held on for a 51-48 victory over 3A No. 8 Kansas.

The Lady Tigers did not return this year.

Kansas won the boys’ crown with a 56-38 romp over Mounds.

The Mounds’ girls used a 34-28 edge in the second half to pull out their win.

Quapaw, Kansas and Fairland will compete on the boys side while Quapaw, Kansas, Fairland, Afton and Miami are entered in the girls’ competition.

Play begins Monday, Dec. 4 with Quapaw and Kansas squaring off at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Three games are on tap for Tuesday, Dec. 5: Fairland vs. Quapaw girls, 5 p.m.; Fairland vs. Quapaw boys, 6:30 p.m., and Afton vs. Miami girls, 8 p.m.

Thursday pits Kansas vs. Miami girls, 5 p.m.; Kansas vs. Fairland boys, 6:30 p.m.; Afton vs. Fairland girls, 8 p.m.
