It’s still football season for a few schools, but others in the area are transitioning to winter sports.

Fairland and Welch got a jump on everyone by playing their basketball openers on Friday, Nov. 17.

Miami is on the road to start the 2017-18 season, playing at Claremore Sequoyah on Tuesday, Nov. 28 and at Fort Gibson on Friday, Dec. 1.

MHS, which plays in tournaments Dec. 4-9 (girls at Afton and boys at Seneca), won’t open the home portion of the schedule until Tuesday, Dec. 12 when it hosts Vinita.

Also on Tuesday, Nov. 28, its Welch at Wyandotte and Quapaw at Colcord in Lucky 7 Conference play.

Lucky 7 action on Friday, Dec. 1 includes Fairland at Quapaw.

The Miami wrestlers opened their season Saturday, Nov. at the Bixby Open.

The Wardogs host Tahlequah Tuesday, Nov. 28 in varsity and middle school matches, then the varsity competes in the Jay Border Wars duals tournament Friday Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2.

Both the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M wrestling and basketball teams have already launched their seasons.

The inaugural Midwest Classic Bowl, pitting NEO and Independence (Kansas) Community College will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at Red Robertson Field.
