HULBERT — The late-season gauntlet continues for the Afton Eagles.
After surviving a scare from third-ranked Rejoice Christian on Oct. 13, the Eagles face another challenge Friday, Oct. 27, when they travel to eighth-ranked Hulbert.
The Eagles are 4-0 and Hulbert stands 3-1 in District A-7 after a 42-41 loss to Rejoice on Thursday, Oct. 19.
Afton has 47 district points while the Riders are at 30.
As a result of last week’s action, Hulbert and Rejoice Christian are both 2-1, but Afton owns a 22-20 over Rejoice.
“This game is huge with the district points,” Afton head coach Zach Gardner said. “We have to go play on the road. We can win the district on the road or finish as low as third.
“We have to focus and make sure we take care of this week. This is the tale of the season as far as the district, the playoffs, a home seed and all of that. It comes down to this week.”
The Eagles wrap up the regular season at Quapaw on Friday, Nov. 3.
Rejoice quarterback Riley Wilson 66 yard touchdown pass to Matt Nicholson tied the score against Hulbert with 13 seconds left.
The extra point by Will Brown created the winning margin.
Afton remains the consensus No. 1 pick in Class A thanks to a 60-16 thrashing of Foyil.
The Eagles erupted for 44 points in the second quarter to break open the game with Foyil.
They broke out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter then scored six times in just under six minutes in the second.
The game was played with a running clock in the second half.
“This is the time of year where you try to play smart and try to stay as healthy as you can,” Gardner said. “We’ve been pretty fortunate with that aspect of the game.”
In other action Friday, it’s Commerce at Nowata, Chelsea at Wyandotte, Rejoice at Fairland, Destiny Christian at Welch and Bluejacket at Pond Creek-Hunter.
