WELCH — Rolling up a season-best 518 yards in total offense, Welch routed Covington-Douglas 44-6 here Thursday, Oct. 19.

The Wildcats wound up with 397 yards rushing and 121 passing while scoring 44 or more points for the sixth time in eight games.

Senior quarterback Gunner Johnson had 159 yards and two touchdowns while senior running back Josh Baker added 160 yards and one score.

Johnson also was 7 of 15 passing for 121 yards and two TDs.

Senior Brace Welch was on the receving end of all of Johnson’s completions.

Welch grabbed an 8-0 lead in the first quarter on a 16 yard pass from Johnson to Brace Welch. Baker added the conversion.

The Wildcats sandwiched a 51-yard run by Johnson and a 10-yard Johnson-to-Welch pass around a 2-yard run by Covington-Douglas’ Tristen Griffin to create a 22-6 halftime score.

WHS broke the game open with a pair of third-quarter scores: a 1-yard run by Baker and a 24-yard run by Johnson.

The Wildcats’ final score came on a 3-yard run by Jake Davis-Bissing.

Baker also had two conversion runs, Davis-Bissing had one and Tristan Davis caught a conversion pass.

Brace Welch had eight solo tackles while Braxton Turner, Davis-Bissing, Levi Street and Johnson had seven tackles each.

Davis-Bissing had three sacks for 25 yards in losses while Ethan Clark had one for minus-8 yards.

Dalton Duede and Turner each had an interception.

Welch added a game against Destiny Christian on Friday, Oct. 27. That replaces a district contest against Copan, which cancelled its season earlier this month due to a lack of numbers.
