Revises story

COMMERCE — Dominating all three phases of their homecoming game Friday, Sept. 22, the Commerce Tigers started play in District 2A-8 with a 61-6 victory over the Chelsea Green Dragons in front of a large partisan crowd.

Junior quarterback Hayden Moss established a new Commerce single game passing record with seven touchdowns through three quarters on the field. Moss (5-11, 160) completed 11 of 18 passes for 246 yards without an interception.

The previous Commerce single game passing record was six touchdowns shared by Clint Reading in 2004 and Warren Brumley in 1977.

Tiger head coach Steve Moss also coached in his 200th game as a member of the Commerce coaching staff — 126 as an assistant and 74 as head coach.

“It was something special for me and my son with him throwing for seven touchdowns on that 200th game,” Steve Moss said. “That will be nice memory forever.”

Not only did the Tigers generate 534 yards in total offense, but the Commerce defense also recovered three fumbles and an interception that led to 21 points.

The Tigers special teams were forced to punt only one time while keeping Chelsea in precarious field position on kickoffs.

Senior wide out Trevor Browning made a triumphant return to the Tigers starting lineup by catching four touchdown passes. Browning missed last week with a separated shoulder injury suffered against Afton.

During the first quarter the Tigers scored on every possession while constructing a 28-6 cushion.

Browning caught a 10-yard TD pass from Hayden Moss at the 8:30 juncture to conclude a 50-yard; eight play drive. Hayden Moss kicked the point after for a 7-0 lead.

Hayden Moss found senior wide receiver Lupe Prado open on a crossing route for a 36-yard touchdown pass at the 5:32 mark. Once again Moss kicked the PAT for a 14-0 advantage.

The Green Dragon’s scored with 3:58 left in the first quarter as junior wide out Kody Honneger snared a 78-yard TD pass from senior running back Austin Veysey on a halfback option play. The two-point conversion run was stuffed by an aggressive Commerce penetration.

Circling left end, Prado outraced the Green Dragons for a 61-yard touchdown run in just 16 seconds. Hayden Moss booted the extra point for a 21-6 Tigers lead.

The Moss-to-Browning combination clicked on a 15-yard TD pass to conclude a 32-yard drive in just two plays. The point-after by Moss with 0:58 showing on the clock produced a 28-6 cushion heading into the second quarter.

Four minutes into the quarter Commerce freshman defensive end Kolby Dean made the first of two fumble recoveries at the Chelsea 31-yard line. The Moss-to-Browning duo clicked for a 31-yard touchdown pass at the 8:16 mark. The extra point sailed wide right for a 34-6 Tigers lead.

Dean’s second fumble recovery set Commerce up at the Chelsea 15-yard line. On the second play, junior running Chris Ibarra returned to the lineup after missing two games with an injury and advanced the ball from the 9-yard line to the one.

After a double foul, junior running back Ryan Dunbar scored on a 6-yard run with 7:15 until halftime.

Honneger blocked the PAT by Moss for a 40-6 score.

Prado caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Moss and offensive guard Kiante Edwards scored on a fumblerooskie for a 48-6 Commerce margin at half.

During the third quarter the Moss-to-Browning pair connected on a 36-yard TD pass with 2:03 showing on the clock. The point-after sailed wide left for a 54-6 Tigers lead heading into the last 12 minutes.

Freshman running back Iman Burrows totally out ran the exhausted Chelsea defense for a nifty 91-yard touchdown run at the 3:18 mark. The run came after Dean intercepted a pass at the Commerce 3-yard line.

Salvador Martinez kicked the point-after to complete the scoring for Commerce.

Burrows led the Tigers ground game with one carry for 91 yards while Prado contributed 86 yards on three carries.

Ibarra ran for 31 yards on two attempts while Dunbar rushed for 30 yards on four carries and Lance Hyatt added 26 yards on two rushes. Jesse Cardenas gained 14 yards on three carries along with 10 yards on six attempts by Hayden Moss.
