WELCH — Getting the early lead in both games were the key for Welch in its sweep of its games in the Class B District 24 fast-pitch softball tournament here Thursday, Sept. 21.
The Lady Wildcats (25-8) jumped out to a 7-1 lead in a 17-1 rout of Copan in the first round, were up 4-0 in the opening frame of a 12-3 win against South Coffeyville in the winners’ bracket final then broke out to a 2-0 lead in the first of a 14-0 win in the championship game with the Lady Lions.
“That was absolutely the key — playing to our potential early,” Welch coach Sam Schaper said. “We hit the ball very well.”
Pitcher Hailey Haskell turned in three solid games, allowing only four runs and seven hits total.
The Lady Wildcats find out Monday where they will be sent for regional play that starts Thursday, Sept. 28.
South Coffeyville notched a 14-2 win over Copan in the first round.

The Lady Wildcats pounded out 14 hits and played errorless softball to win the title.
They stretched a 2-0 lead into 3-0 in the second and 7-0 in the third.
Welch continued to pull away, scoring twice in the fourth and got a final four runs in the fifth.
Maddie Schaper had three singles to lead the Welch attack.
Haskell helped herself with a two-run homer (her seventh of the season) in the first inning and a single.
Addison Chenoweth added two doubles, Maddison Horton contributed a double and single and Cheyenne Johns had two singles.
Ashlee Morgan tripled and Brennae Perkins and Maddison Gilman singled.
Haskell (17-4) struck out two and walked none while logging her sixth one-hitter on the season.
Aubrey Dolan had a single for the Lady Lions’ only hit.

Welch 12, South Coffeyville 3
The Lady Wildcats were up 4-0 in the first and came back with another four runs in the second.
South Coffeyville got a single run in the second and added two more in the third.
Welch’s 14-hit attack included a double and two singles from Perkins.
Morgan delivered two triples while Addison Chenoweth, Gilman and Johns had two singles each.
Horton had a triple and Olivia Chenoweth and Haskell chipped in with a single.
Haskell struck out eight and walked none while allowing five hits.
Kendal Kallenberger and Meaghan Littlepage had a double each for the Lady Lions while Paige Kitterman, Chasey Rexwinkle and Dolan added singles.
Welch 17, Copan 1
The Lady Wildcats sent 15 batters to the plate during a 10-run explosion in the second inning.
They had scored seven times in the first.
Welch’s 10 runs came on a two-run single by Morgan, an RBI double by Addison Chenoweth, a ground out by Maddie Schaper, three wild pitches, two passed balls and an error.
Welch only had seven hits, but benefitted from eight walks, four hit batters, four wild pitches and an error.
Addison Chenoweth had two doubles and a single while Olivia Chenoweth doubled.
Morgan, Maddie Schaper and Johns each had a single. Schaper had four RBIs
Morgan had a one-hitter. She fanned one and walked three.
