VERDIGRIS — Verdigris jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and coasted to a 7-3 fast-pitch softball victory over Welch here Monday, Aug. 7.

Welch originally had been scheduled to play in the Catoosa Festival, but it was cancelled due to a wet field. Lady Wildcat coach Sam Schaper was able to set up the game with Verdigris at the last minute.

The Lady Wildcats cut the gap in half in the third on RBI singles by Brennae Perkins and Olivia Chenoweth.

Verdigris countered with three runs in the fourth.

Welch got its final run in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded walk to Addison Chenoweth.

The Lady Cats had six hits in the game, including two singles by Perkins.

Maddie Schaper tripled and Olivia Chenoweth, Maddison Horton and Ashlee Morgan adding singles.

Five different players had hits for Verdigris, including three-run homers by Megan Turner and Kylie Green and a double by Faith Weisenbach.

Welch starter Olivia Pitcher was tagged with the loss. She threw two innings then turned things over to Hailey Haskell.

Winning pitcher Jaylan Gibson struck out eight and walked two for the Lady Cardinals.

Welch begins play in the Quapaw Invitational Thursday, facing Ketchum at 10 a.m. and Colcord at 1 p.m. and Fairland at 7 p.m. Friday.
