Area high school softball teams ramp up for their season openers with a final round of scrimmages this week.

Two of the area’s schools have new coaches for the 2017 season.

Former Crowder College standout Kaily Harvey has taken the reins at Commerce.

Kae Lani Bryan, an assistant coach at NJCAA Division II Labette (Kansas) Community College, now is in charge at Quapaw.

Miami travels to Claremore Monday for an 11 a.m. scrimmage.

The Lady Wardogs host Fairland Tuesday, the middle school at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.

Miami plays its annual intersquad fundraiser Thursday, the middle school taking the field at 5 p.m. followed by the high school at 6:30 p.m.

“I am pretty happy with us so far,” Lady Wardog coach Lauren Strack said. “It will be nice to get some more live at-bats under our belt. I have enjoyed the kids and their work ethic.”

MHS faces Mannford Monday, Aug. 8 in the Claremore Festival.

The Lady Tigers travel to Grove Friday, where they will scrimmage Garber at 11:30 a.m. and the host Lady Ridgerunners at 12:45 p.m.

In addition to the action at Miami, Fairland’s tune-ups will be Monday with Warner, Thursday at Wyandotte and Thursday with fast-pitch power Oktaha.

Quapaw travels to Catoosa Tuesday then hosts Caney Valley on Friday.

Welch travels to Kellyville Tuesday for a scrimmage that also includes Sperry and Liberty.

Thursday at 11 a.m., the Lady Wildcats host Kellyville.

Wyandotte has five scrimmages in four days.

The Lady Bears travel to Verdigris Tuesday, facing the host Lady Cards at 9 a.m. and Grove at 10:30 a.m.

Thursday, WHS hosts Chelsea at 10 a.m. then travel to Grove Friday, meeting the hosts at 9 a.m. and Garber at 10:15 a.m.

Under Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association rules, teams are allowed to start their seasons Monday, Aug. 7.
