COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two sophomore members of the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Lady Norse basketball team were selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American squad.
Veteran shooting guard Maria Delgado Suarez (5-9 from Bucaramonga, Columbia) earned first team all-American honors after helping lead NEO to its fourth consecutive Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference title.
NEO advanced to the second round of the NJCAA Women’s Division 1 National Tournament in Lubbock, Texas two years in a row. The Lady Norse finished 15-1 in the conference and 29-3 overall.
Delgado-Suarez led NEO with a 15.9 scoring average through 32 games. She also led the team in 3-point shooting by connecting on 86 of 221 for 39 percent. She averaged 3.7 rebounds per game while recording 80 assists and 42 steals.
Veteran forward Harriet (Hatty) Bende Belobi Nawezhi (6-2 from Brussels, Belgium) was named to the third team all-America squad.
Nawezhi established NEO school records with 83 blocked shots as a sophomore, 141 blocked shots during her two-year career, 15 double-double games as a sophomore and 25 total career double-double games.
As a sophomore, Nawezhi averaged 13.4 points in 32 games. She led NEO in total field goal percentage by hitting 170 of 298 for 57 percent. Nawezhi also led the Lady Norse with a 9.7 rebounding average. She recorded 70 assists and 32 steals.
