COMMERCE — Miami’s girls breezed to an 8-0 victory over Commerce here Monday night.

The score was 2-0 at the break, then the Lady Wardogs got their next six goals in the span of about 30 minutes.

“I wasn’t disappointed at the half, but I really would liked to have some more goals,” Miami coach David Douthit said. “I thought we passed the ball around and worked the ball around as well as we have done all year.”

The Lady Wardogs had given up 14 goals in the past two games, falling 6-0 to Hilldale and 8-1 to Oologah.

Douthit tweaked the lineup and it paid off.

Alexa Payne played the bulk of the match in goal, with Baylee Scott taking over with about nine minutes remaining as Miami posted its fourth shutout win.

“She didn’t have to make a lot of big saves,” Douthit said.

Rebecca Bell had a hat trick, Scott and Abby Ishmael each scored twice and Cynthia Vandiver hit the back of the net once.

This marked the second time this season the Lady Wardogs had scored eight goals in a match. The other was an 8-1 decision over Tulsa Webster.

The Lady Wardogs improved to 3-1 in District 4A-8 play. They are 5-5 on the season.

The Lady Tigers slipped to 1-11 and 1-5 in district play.

“They are working hard and improving,” Commerce coach John Medlin said. “Most of the girls have never played before this season.”

Commerce has a make-up game with Verdigris Monday then Miami hosts the Lady Cardinals Tuesday.
