MIAMI — Clutch free throw shooting down the stretch helped Miami hold off the Green Country Defenders in the Boys Gold third-place game at the 72nd annual NEO High School Basketball Tournament presented by American Bus Sales.
The Wardogs hit 14 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal a 51-37 victory.
As had been their MO on several occasions this season, the Wardogs held a nice lead and let it get away.
They were up by 13 at the half and seven heading into the fourth quarter.
A pair of treys by the Defenders slashed their deficit to 39-35 with 1:43 remaining.
But Miami held a 12-2 advantage down the stretch to nail down its fourth win of the season.
The Wardogs had been bumped into the third-place game with a 58-35 loss to 4A No. 11 Roland Friday night.
Kameron and Kaleb Jinks accounted for 33 of the Wardogs’ point total. Kameron led the way with 18 and Kaleb had a career best 15.
Others scoring for Miami were Kai Hamilton seven (all on free throws in the fourth quarter), Eli Coyne five, Jack Osborn four and Conner Womack added two.
Marshall Lebar scored 12 for the Defenders.
This was the second win in three tries for Miami against the Defenders.
The teams split games last season. A game here earlier this month was scrapped due to the threatening weather.
The Wardogs travel top Vinita Tuesday night for a Verdigris Valley Conference game.
