FAIRLAND — Fairland picked up just its second win in the last seven meetings with Afton Monday night as the Lady Owls notched a 58-53 decision.

Afton earned a split on the night by claiming a 52-59 victory.

“We finally started making some shots and clicked offensively,” Fairland coach Justin Goins said. “We rebounded really well.”

The Lady Owls (5-6) jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter and were up 29-24 at the break.

Afton (6-4) got to within three with a 13-11 margin in the third frame, but the hosts iced the win with an 18-16 edge in the final eight minutes.

Nikki Dingle had 14 and Breanne Johnson tallied 12 for the Lady Owls.

Others with points for Fairland were Savannah Hutchison, nine; Kyndall Davis, eight; Vanna Crosby, seven; Cayden Harper, six; Tori Barker, two.

Carlee Shinn had 32 points for the Lady Eagles. She had 16 in the fourth quarter and converted on 15 of 20 free throw chances.

Daylee Osburn chipped in with 11 points and Skylar Hicks added seven. Clarissa Rice and Ragan Hudson tallied two and one, respectively.

Boys: Afton 62, Fairland 59

A pair of free throws by Wil Amos broke a 51-51 tie and sent Afton on its way to a 62-59 victory.

The Owls led 12-7 after one and 33-23 at the half.

Afton cut into the lead with a 15-13 edge in the third period then scored 22 points in the fourth.

Gunner Hudson scored a game-high 25 points for the Eagles, who also got 19 from Amos and 10 from Gabe Mustain.

Brett Hollon added four and Brier Julian and Cole Mikesell chipped in with two each.

Tyler Graham’s 22 points were tops for Fairland. Bryson Cottrell and Westin Allen added 16 and 10, respectively.

Isaac Matthews scored nine and

Trevor Graham had two for the Owls.

Both Afton and Fairland will be competing in the Northeastern A&M High School Basketball Tournament.

Afton’s boys face Miami at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Miami Activity Center in a Boys Gold bracket game.

Both the Fairland varsity and JV teams are entered. The varsity faces the Roland JV at 4:30 p.m. at the Wolfe Student Activity Center in Boys Blue play while the JV Owls tackle Braggs at 10:30 a.m. at the MAC in Boys Norse action.

Fairland and Watts square off at 3 p.m. at the MAC in a Girls Norse game.

In a Girls Blue bracket game, Afton meets Braggs at noon at the SAC.
