WELCH — Commerce and Welch split high school basketball games here Tuesday night.
Welch chalked up a 48-25 win in the girls’ game then the Commerce boys rolled to a 61-29 victory.
In the girls’ game, Welch broke out to a 12-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
The Lady Cats (8-3) rolled into the half with a 29-10 advantage.
Commerce (1-7) held a 7-3 edge in the third frame, but WHS regained control in the fourth with a 16-8 burst.
Olivia Chenoweth and Jaeli Jorgenson were Welch’s leaders with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Chenoweth had 10 of her total in the first half and Jorgenson got seven of her 11 in the final eight minutes of the game.
Others scoring for Welch were Hailey Haskell with seven, Aspen Wood and Maddi Schaper with five each, Olivia Pitcher with four, Ashlee Morgan with two and Lili Johnson with one.
Morgan Connell was the Lady Tigers’ leader with eight points.
Morgan Ballard added six, followed by Gracie Bundy with four, Josalynn Barr, three, and River Friel and Reghan Trease with two each.
Boys: Commerce 61, Welch 29
The Tigers broke open a close game with a 21-1 salvo in the second quarter. They had just led 11-7 after one.
Welch held a 17-11 edge in the third period, but CHS got things turned back around with an 18-4 run in the fourth.
Three players scored in double figures for Commerce: Carlos Pinales with 13, Stephan Blankenship with 11 ande Donnie Brown with 10.
Also getting points for the Tigers (3-6) were Terrance Krush with nine, Hunter Burkybile and Isaac Shelton with six each, Josue Dominguez with four and Lupe Prado with two.
Nolan Schaper was the leader for the Wildcats (1-10) with 15 points.
Braxton Turner added seven, followed by Chance Perry with four, Blake Brannon with two and Chase Herd with one.
Commerce hosts Colcord on Friday while Welch entertains Foyil Saturday night.
