WELCH — A big second half helped carry the Welch girls to a 58-41 victory over Foyil here Tuesday night.
Foyil gained a split on the night by claiming a 45-29 victory in the boys’ game.
Each team got eight points in the first quarter of the girls game, then Welch held a 19-11 edge in the second to open up a 27-19 halftime advantage.
The Lady Wildcats then outscored Foyil (0-1) 14-8 and 17-8 over the final two frames to claim their third win in four outings.
Olivia Pitcher scored 18 points to head up three players who hit double figures for Welch.
Olivia Chenoweth had 14 points and Aspen Wood chipped in with 12.
Others scoring for Welch were Maddi Schaper with eight and Jayci Atwood, Jaeli Jorgenson and Ashlee Morgan with two each.
In the boys’ game, Welch (0-4) saw a 6-5 first-quarter lead turn into a 17-10 halftime deficit.
The Panthers (1-0) held a 12-8 edge in the third quarter then outscored Welch 15-11 over the final eight minutes.
Blake Brannon’s 10 points led the scoring for the Cats. Nolan Schaper had six and Braxton Turner contributed four.
Nate Beaty, Chance Perry and Colton Armstrong added three each.
Welch is idle until Monday, when it begins play in the Kenneth Sooter Invitational by facing Commerce. The girls’ game tips off at 7 p.m. with the boys following at 8:30 p.m.
