JAY — The Will Rogers Middle School eighth grade boys held off Tahlequah 35-33 Monday night in the first round of the Jay Tournament.
The Wardogs faced Locust Grove Tuesday night in the winners’ bracket. Locust Grove had a first-round bye.
The seventh-grade girls suffered a 28-24 loss to Tahlequah.
They played Tuesday in a consolation bracket game against either Jay or Locust Grove.
In the eighth-grade game, Will Rogers jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first quarter and coasted into the half with a 16-9 advantage.
Tahlequah tied the game with a 15-8 edge in the third quarter, but the Wardogs used an 11-9 edge in the fourth to create the final margin.
Clay McCormick had 13 points for WRMS, which also got nine from Jett Cheatham, seven from Gage Drake, four from Luke Hackett and two from Anthony Yardy.
In the seventh-grade game, Tahlequah used an 11-3 advantage in the third quarter to turn things around.
Will Rogers was up 6-4 after the opening frame then carried a 14-9 lead into halftime.
After flipping the score in the third quarter, the Lady Cubs held an 8-7 margin in the fourth.
Scout Mayfield had 10 points and Makywa Jones added nine.
The Lady Wardogs also got three from Kylie Jinks and two from Karley Browning.
