Shirley F. Parsons of Arlington, Texas, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at home. She was 75.

She was born Shirley Ann Cook on Feb. 5, 1933, in Stinnett, Texas, to Thornley Ray and Erma Cook. She grew up in Miami, graduated from Northeastern Oklahoma State University in Tahlequah and earned a master's degree from the University of Colorado.

She taught English in the Denver Public School System and retired after many years.

Survivors include her husband, LaVern Parsons; three sons and their wives, Donald V. and Pam Downum of Wilkesville, Ohio, Robert G. and Nancy Downum of Aurora, Colo., and Kelsey R. and Julie Downum of Arlington; one brother, Theodore W. Cook of Lubbock, Texas, and Saudi Arabia; one sister, Wanda Jackson of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Skalecke of Elizabeth, Colo., Tamara Smith of Portland, Ore., Elizabeth Driscoll of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Dustin Girard of Mar Vista, Calif., and Christie Barlow of Aurora, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Carl Cook.
