Darrell Eugene Craig of Miami passed away at Osborne Care & Rehab on Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He was 85.
He was born Dec. 15, 1923, in North Miami, Okla., to Jack O. Craig and Lula Mae (Cameron) Craig. After the passing of his father when Darrell was about two years old, his mother later married Bud Myers. Darrell graduated from Miami High School in 1942.
He married his one and only love, his sweetheart of 66 years, Myrel Pauline French of Fairland, Okla., on Sept. 8, 1942.
Also in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army (Artillery Division), serving three years in the South Pacific. After the war, he returned to Miami, working at B.F. Goodrich for more than six years then working for the U.S. Postal Service, first as a city carrier and then a rural route carrier for 32 years, retiring in 1983.
Darrell was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Miami, Okla.
Darrell was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his life-long and best fishing partner was his wife. Other hobbies included gardening, woodworking and fly tying.
He is survived by his wife, Myrel Craig of the home; daughters, Connie Wallace of Tulsa, Okla., and Diane Stowell and husband Ron of Miami, and son, Brent Craig of Miami. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Craig Litle and wife Dana of The Woodlands, Texas, Kim Hendricks of Sand Springs, Okla, and Michael Wallace of Tulsa, Okla.; Scott Stowell and wife Carrie of Edmond, Okla., Bryan Stowell of Tulsa, Okla., and Gina Rentfrow and husband Jeramie of Miami, Okla.; and Jeremy Johnson of Tulsa. Great-grandchildren are Lauren and Jacob Litle; Drew and Erin Hendricks; Ellesee and Britton Stowell; Karly and Macy Rentfrow and Jace Johnson.
He was preceded in passing by his father, stepfather, mother, brothers, John, Eddie, Harold and Virgil Craig and James “Curly” Myers, and sister, Eileen Powers.
Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Miami. The Rev. Leon Weece will officiate with the Rev. Rick Longcrier assisting. Burial will follow at the Fairland Cemetery in Fairland, Okla.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home in Miami, Okla.
Pallbearers will be the grandsons: Jeremy Johnson, Craig Litle, Jeramie Rentfrow, Bryan Stowell, Scott Stowell and Michael Wallace. Honorary pallbearers will be Harlin Brewer, G.C. Freeman, Frank Gray, Glen Lowe and Charles Venis.
