Harold Leon Shafer of Baxter Springs, Kan., died Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Quaker Hill Nursing Home.
He was 89.
Mr. Shafer was born May 26, 1919, in Joplin, Mo., to Charles and Alice (Holman) Shafer.
He was a World War II and Korean War veteran, serving as a lieutenant in the Army.
He worked for B.F. Goodrich for 39 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Baxter Springs.
He married Lodema Culver on April 5, 1953. She preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Kay Huxall; his parents, five brothers and one sister.
Survivors include one son and his wife, Stanley and Laurie Shafer of Baxter Springs; one daughter and her husband, Sandra Shafer-Preston and Robert “Dago” Preston of Tulsa; four grandchildren, Shanel Shafer-Alexander, David Shafer, Skeet Preston and Cory Preston, and three great-grandchildren, Nathan Bohannan, Javen Alexander and Cassidy Preston.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Baxter Springs Cemetery. Pastor Jeff Street will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt's Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.
