Palmer N. Smith died January 29, 2009, at his residence in Commerce, OK. Mr. Smith was born to Albert Floyd and Ora (Waldroop) Smith, September 21, 1918 in Dennis, Oklahoma, now the location of Grand Lake. Smith was a lifetime resident of Miami, Vinita, and the Grand Lake area. He retired from B.F. Goodrich in 1978 and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and V.F.W. in Miami.
Smith served the Army in the Panama Canal Zone and Europe during World War II as Commander of an artillery battalion.
Palmer was married January 9, 1947 in Miami to Hildred (Honey) Underwood, who preceded him in death in 2006. Since that time Smith has received exceptional services and care at Allgood Estates and Eastwood Manor of Commerce, Oklahoma, and Integris Regency Hospice of Miami.
He is survived by two sons, John-Palmer Smith of Charlotte, North Carolina, and James Smith and wife Debra of Jefferson City, Missouri; a grandson, Jordan Smith and wife, Deedra of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; a granddaughter, Allison Jolly and husband Aaron of Osage Beach, Missouri; a great-granddaughter, Isabel of Lee’s Summit, and a great-grandson, Ashton Jolly of Jefferson City. Other survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Palmer was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Minnie Fortner, Parrillee Boylan, Rilla Crawford and Pat Morrison; two brothers, Homer Smith and Doran Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at Trinity Baptist Church in Vinita, OK. A Service of Committal and Burial will follow at the McLaughlin Cemetery, Cleora, OK.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Burckhalter Funeral Home of Vinita.
Memorials are directed by the family to First United Methodist Church, Charlotte, North Carolina and/or The Missouri Baptist Foundation, Jefferson City, Missouri.
