Dr. Glenn Wendelle “Doc” Cosby, long-time resident and physician in Miami, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, after a long illness. He was 90.

Cosby was born March 25, 1917, in Milton, Kan., to Clinton and Willa (Henson) Cosby. He has lived in Miami since 1946. He received a degree from Northwestern State University in Alva, OK and later his degree in medicine from The University of Oklahoma.

He was a World War II veteran of the Army where he served as a doctor stationed in New York City and Muskogee, OK, with a rank of captain. He later became a colonel in the Army Reserve.

After leaving the service, he moved to Miami where he began his private practice. He retired in 1987. As a physician, he proudly delivered over 6,000 babies in the Miami area. He was president of the Board of Preceptors for the OU Medical School, medical director for the Ottawa County Health Department for many years, served a term as chief of staff at Baptist Hospital in Miami, one of the founders of the Miami Clinic and served on the Miami City Council as police and fire commissioner for approximately 16 years. He was the owner of Al & Doc's Forty-five Ranch Sporting Goods Store, a member of the First Baptist Church and was a loving husband and father.

He married Ruth Melton on Aug. 15, 1938. She preceded him in death on Feb. 15, 2005. He was also preceded by his parents and one sister, Edith McCurley.

Survivors include four children, Carole Leamon of Miami, Nancy and John Glahn of Joplin, Mo., Wendelle and Heather Cosby of Yukon, OK, and Bill and Dale Kay Cosby of Oklahoma City; one brother, Gene Cosby of Colorado; five grandchildren, Don Leamon of Pittsburg, Kan., Chris Leamon of Miami, Jason Glahn of Jefferson City, Mo., Allison and Bert Hardin of Fayetteville, Ark., and Clinton Cosby of Yukon, OK; three great-grandchildren, Andrew Leamon of Pittsburg, Kan., and Cassie and Alex Leamon, both of Miami.

Services will be Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 10 a.m. at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home in Miami. Interment will follow in G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami.

Pallbearers will be Wendelle Cosby, Bill Cosby, Don Leamon, Chris Leamon, John Glahn and Jason Glahn.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home in Miami.
