Helen Jo Painter of Miami died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Miami Nursing Center after an illness. She was 96.
Mrs. Painter was born Oct. 11, 1912, in Kansas City, Mo., to James and Julia Gleeson. She graduated from St. Vincents Academy and the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.
She was a charter member and past president of Chapter AJ, P.E.O., in Miami; AAUW of Miami; Sacred Heart Catholic Altar Society and past president of Miami Rotary Anns. She was the first president of the Ladies Golf Association at the Miami Golf and Country Club and president of the Tri-State Golf Association.
She married Woodrow W. Painter on Dec. 25, 1938, in Kansas City, Mo. He preceded her in death.
Survivors include two sons, Woody W. Painter Jr. of Miami and James G. Painter of Blue Springs, Mo., three grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Carl Kerkenmeyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Painter family plot at Mount Hope Cemetery in Afton.
Pallbearers will be Greg Painter, Mike Troyer, Tom Robertson, Bob Ott and Sonny Painter.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami. Visitation will follow.
Memorials are suggested to the Altar Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
