Roger Lee Hawkins of Stillwater died Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, in Oklahoma City. He was 53.
Mr. Hawkins was born Nov. 29, 1953, in Miami to Ralph Edward Hawkins and Mary Louise (Boston) Hawkins.
He attended school in Miami, graduating from Miami High School in 1972. He graduated from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami in 1974 with an associate's degree in business administration. While at NEO he was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa fraternity. He graduated from Langston University in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in accounting with minors in Computer Science and Management. He received an exemplary service award from the School of Business. He moved to Stillwater in 1985.
He carhopped for EC's AAA Drive-In and Ken's Drive-In and Restaurant in Miami then ran the kitchen in Ken's until 1974. He worked for Pizza Inn Inc. in Miami and Springfield, Mo., until 1980, then worked for Taco Tico in Fort Scott, Kan., and Parsons, Kan., where he trained restaurant managers. He worked for Long John Silvers in Stillwater as an assistant manager and worked for KVRO and KKND radio stations from 1989-1990. He also worked for Dial N Communications Answering Service and ran his own income tax service while attending college.
He joined the Miami Jaycees in 1972 and became an exhausted rooster in 1992. He served as a Jaycees officer, including president in Miami, Fort Scott, Parsons and Stillwater. In 1986, he served as Northeast Area district director for the Oklahoma Jaycees and oversaw 12 chapters. In 1991 he was named honorary governor, the highest honor awarded. In 1995, he was awarded JCI Senator, the highest honor awarded by the Junior Chamber International. He served in various offices with the Stillwater and national Elks Lodge. He was twice named Officer of the Year and was named Lady Elks Man of the Year in 1998. He served on the Stillwater Sister Cities Council and the Stillwater Wheel Chair Access Awareness Group. He was a member of University Heights Baptist Church.
He married Dawn Pittman on Aug. 15, 1986, in Stillwater. She survives, of Stillwater.
Additional survivors include two brothers, Richard Hawkins and his wife Jone of Stillwater and Ronald Hawkins and his wife Donna of Miami; three sisters, Gloria Graham of Neodesha, Kan., Donna Williams and her husband Gerald of Miami and Vicki Tunnel and her husband Bryan of Broken Arrow.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Janis Kay Hawkins.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Strode Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dan Yankunas will officiate. Burial will be in Morrison Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Barney Divine, Larry Jimison, Daniel Lockwood, Charlie Peterson, Gene Ragsdale, Andrew Tunnell, John Williams and Scott Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Felber, Jeff Hawkins, Nicholas Hawkins and Guy Lozier.
The family will greet friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
