Virginia Bell Bayliss Wood of Quapaw died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at Eastwood Manor Nursing Center in Commerce. She was 97.
Mrs. Wood was born July 31, 1910, in Mountain Grove, Mo., to John and Mary (Finney) Ludlum. She moved to Baxter Springs, Kan., as a child and to Picher when she was 18. She lived in Picher until 1991 when she moved to Quapaw.
She worked at the ladies dress shop in Picher, OK Cleaners in Picher for five years and the Miami Cleaners for five years. She also worked at Retha's Café in Picher and later retired from the maintenance department of Consolidated Supply of Treece, Kan. She was past president of both Picher PTA and Picher Band Boosters and also a member of the Pithian Sisters of Picher.
She was married to John Bayliss. He preceded her in death in 1964. She later married Arthur Wood. He preceded in death in 1989.
She is also preceded in death by one son, Jack Vernon Bayliss, eight sisters and one brother.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, John Edwin and Peggy Bayliss of Marshall, Texas, Jimmy Sherman and Betty Bayliss of Picher and Jerry Lee and Carlene Bayliss of Quapaw; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and a special friend, Pauline Crisp.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Picher and the Rev. Jerry Von Moss will officiate.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Interment will follow at G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Picher.
