James Robert Rawls, 65, of Miami, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Missouri.

He was born June 24, 1944, in Clovis, N.M. to Robert Harris and Iola (Victor) Rawls.

He graduated from Clovis High School in 1962.

He served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1967 and was honorably discharged with the rank of Petty Officer third class during Vietnam.

He married Mary Alice Robbins, Nov. 1, 1968, in Canadian, Texas and she survives him of the home.

He attended and graduated from the Wayland Baptist College in 1970 in Plainview, Texas, then attended Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Kansas City, Mo., where he graduated with a Masters Degree, finalizing his education at the Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif., where he received his Doctorate of Ministry in Family Ministries in 1984.

He pastored churches in Texas, Missouri, Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma before retiring in 2009 from the Dearing Baptist Church in Dearing, Kan.

He was also Assistant Administrator for the Arizona Baptist Children’s Home, New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home and Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children in Owasso.

He is also survived by three daughters, Toye and husband Joel Harris of Miami, Terri and husband Steven Welsh of Raeford, N.C. and Tonya Sands of Miami; five grandchildren, Gage Harris, Bryant Welsh, Hannah Welsh, Carter and Carver Sands.

Services will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, June 6, at the Northwest Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Bush, Fulton Amonette, and Benny Gresham officiating. Interment will follow in the Glen Abbey Cemetery east of Miami, under the direction of the Paul Thomas Funeral Home of Miami.
