James Kimbrough Jr., age 86, of Miami, Ok went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 19, 2012. Jim was born in Cushing, OK on February 8, 1926 to James and Gertrude (Gallagher) Kimbrough. He spent most of his young life in Oklahoma before moving to Joplin, MO where he graduated from Joplin High School in 1944. That same year he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during WWII, serving as part of the Medical Corp.
Upon returning to the States, Jim met and married the girl of his dreams, Norma June Steele of Baxter Springs, KS where they married on June 1, 1947. They began their married life in Miami, OK. Jim owned and operated College Grocery for 15 years. In 1974 he began working at Osborn Rexall Drug. Upon leaving Osbornís, Jim explored an opportunity with Miami Baptist Hospital where he worked until he retired. Immediately following his retirement, he rejoined the Osborn team where he worked until his second retirement on November 11, 2011. Jim was a charter member, Deacon and Sunday School teacher at Northwest Baptist Church of Miami and a charter member of the Evening Lionís Club of Miami. He served on the Miami School Board for ten years which included a term as President in the mid-70ís. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Miami and the Miami Noon Lionís Club.
Jim was a golfer, fisherman and avid OU fan. He was a loving husband, devoted dad and grandpa. He was a servant of God, his country and the Miami community. He lived life to the fullest and brought joy and laughter to those around him. His most profound legacy, which was displayed on a plaque on his dresser, is summed up in these powerful wordsÖThe greatest gift a father can give his children is to love their mother.
Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years Norma; his children and their spouses, Jim (Jan) Kimbrough of Joplin, MO; Don Kimbrough of Owasso, OK; Kim (Dee) Renshaw of Jenks, OK; and Rob (Melanie) Kimbrough of Miami, OK. Eleven granddaughters, Jennifer (Casey) Coulter of Joplin, MO; Julie (Greg) Smith of Miami, OK; Jill Kimbrough of Dallas, TX; Emily (Matt) Condry of Broken Arrow, OK; Anne (Luke) Higgins of Edmond, OK; Lauren (Mike) Meacham of Pittsburgh, PA; Beth Renshaw of Muskogee, OK; Taylor Renshaw of Edmond, OK; Sarah Northcutt of Joplin, MO; Katie Kimbrough of Washington D.C.; Allison Kimbrough of Fayetteville, AR and 16 great-grandchildren. A sister, Patricia Moore of Trophy Club, TX, also survives him. Jim is preceded in death by his parents James and Gertrude Gallagher Kimbrough and his brother Don Kimbrough.
The celebration of his life will be held Monday, March 26, 2012 at 2pm at First Baptist Church, Miami, OK with Reverend Rick Longcrier officiating. Burial will follow at the GAR Cemetery in Miami. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 pm at the Cooper Memorial Chapel at the Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Miami (Formerly Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home).
