Lawrence E. Mathis of rural Miami died Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at home after an illness. He was 83. 

Mr. Mathis was born Aug. 3, 1923, in Fairland to John and Neda (Jones) Mathis. He moved to Miami in 1985, coming from Oroville, Calif. 

He was a veteran of the Army. 

He worked as a miner in the Picher mines. He was a member of the Cherokee Tribe. 

He married Avanell Nickerson on April 30, 1944, in Columbus Kan. She preceded him in death in 2005. 

He was also preceded in death by one son, Jackie Mathis; one brother, Claude Mathis, and one sister, Wilma Smith. 

Survivors include three daughters, Patti Strang of Miami, Avis Onyett and husband Richard of Gridley Calif., and Carol Elledge of Sandy, Ore.; one brother, Cecil Mathis of Oroville; one sister, Wanda Chilton of Oroville, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. 

At his request, the body has been cremated. 

Memorial services will be held at a later date.
