James Kelley Garrett of Commerce, Okla., died Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo., after an illness. He was 82.
Mr. Garrett was born March 9, 1927, in Tuskahoma, Okla., He lived in Commerce since November 2008, moving from Cardin, Okla., where he had lived since 1961.
He served in the U.S. Army in Korea.
He was a truck driver for H.D. Youngman Contractors and for Yellow Freight Systems in Baxter Springs, Kan. He was a member of the Cardin Baptist Church in Cardin, Okla., and the Teamsters Union.
Mr. Garrett was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Berl, Rex, Sterling and Carl Garrett, and a granddaughter, Jennifer Bryant Judd.
He married Patty Kveum on Oct. 23, 1947, in Cardin, Okla. She survives, of the home.
Additional survivors include two sons and their wives, David and Pam Garrett of Miami, Okla., and Steve and Kellie Garrett of Commerce, Okla.; one daughter and her husband, Debbie and Dale Bryant of Cardin, Okla.; one daughter-in-law, Debbie Sue Garrett of Miami, Okla.; one sister, Ruby Nicholson of Wyandotte, Okla.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday, May 11, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Okla. The Rev. David Jackson and the Rev. Fred VonMoss will officiate.
Pallbearers will be David Garrett, Steve Garrett, Dale Bryant, Chad Davis, Kris Garrett, Stephen Garrett and Josh Garrett.
Interment will be in G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami, Okla.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. today at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Okla.
