Shawnee resident Ruth Long (93) went home to be with the Lord on Sunday evening, March 4, 2012 at Rose Manor Nursing home in Shawnee, OK.

Velma Ruth Carter was born on April 6, 1918 near Berryville, Carroll County, Arkansas to Kirk William and Mary Elizabeth (Reynolds) Carter, 2nd of only two children.

She married Rev. Arnold Long on July 5, 1937 in Granby, MO. She served along with her husband at Northside Baptist Church, Neosho, MO; Northwest Baptist Church, Miami, OK and Highland Park Baptist Church, Bartlesville, OK and loved to work with children in each pastorate. The Longs retired in Shawnee in 1980.

Her beloved husband Arnold, died December 31, 2011. Her parents and her brother Harley C. Carter, his wives Tina and Pauline, and a nephew Donald R. Carter also preceded her in death.

Ruth is survived by her two children, their spouses and children and 2 great grand-daughters, Meredith and Janice (Ware) Long, Brad Long and Melinda and her husband, Michael Foreman, parents of Ruth's 2 great grand-daughters, Lindsey & Nicole; Patty & Warren McWilliams and their daughters, Amy and Karen. Also surviving are Arnold & Ruth's nieces and nephews: Riley Kelly and Betty Lou (Kelly) Hill of IL; Glenn Erwin and his wife Barbara of Washburn, MO; Helen (Long) Senter and her husband Mark of Norman; Gloria (Erwin) Shank and her husband Charles of Joplin, MO.

Ruth was a member of University Baptist Church since 1980. A private burial service will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park. A memorial service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at University Baptist Church, 2515 N. Kickapoo, Shawnee. In lieu of flowers, and to honor Ruth's love for children, memorials may be sent to University Baptist Church for Mission Shawnee's Summer Lunch Program which provides meals and activities for less fortunate Shawnee children each summer.

The family will be available to visit with friends following the service at the church.
