James Earl North of Columbus, Kan., died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after an illness. He was 84.

Mr. North was born June 18, 1924, in Faulkner, Kan., to William “Bill” and Elva (Jennings) North. He lived in the Columbus area all of his life.

He was a veteran of the Coast Guard.

He was a truck driver for Yellow Transit for 20 years and was a cattleman. He was of the Methodist faith. He was a 32-Degree Mason, belonged to the Scottish Rite, Elks Lodge in Galena, Kan., the Pecan Growers Association and the Cattleman's Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Peggy L. Maynard of Baxter Springs, Kan.; three sons, Michael E. North of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Steven J. North of Wichita, Kan., and Stanley D. North and wife Lori of Smyrna, Tenn.; two brothers, Larry J. North of Commerce and Johnny R. North of Riverton, Kan.; two sisters, Wanda M. LaFaller of Chetopa, Kan., and Laura A. Fry of Melrose, Kan., 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
