Ernest “Gene” Conner of Afton died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at Integris Grove General Hospital after an illness.

He was 79.

Mr. Conner was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Carroll County, Ark., to James Walter and Clare Jane (Briscoe) Conner. He lived most of his life in Miami.

He was a member of the First Church of God of Miami. He retired from the Miami Police Department after 20 years of service and was then employed by the City of Miami Utility Department for 20 years.

He married Zelphia Genevieve Scott on Sept. 13, 1947, in Miami.

She survives, of the home.

Additional survivors include one son, Ernie Conner Jr. of Camden, Mo.; two daughters, Judy Lamb and Genevieve O'Neal, both of Miami; one brother, Richard Price of Tulsa; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Jettie Connier and Emraline Price, and four brothers, Willie, Allen and Ray Conner and Lee Price.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami. The Rev. Leon Weece will officiate. Burial will be in McLaughlin Cemetery, southeast of Cleora.

Pallbearers will be Miami Police officers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wedneday at the funeral home.
