Eugene Herbert Rathjen died Thursday, July 10, 2008, at his home after an illness. He was 68.

Mr. Rathjen was born Feb. 1, 1940, in Big Cabin to Christoph and Vera Mae (Irons) Rathjen. He attended Vinita schools and joined the Navy in 1956 and served until 1960. While serving in the Nave, Mr. Rathjen worked as a machinist mate, helping to launch aircraft on the USS Ranger.

After discharging from military service, Mr. Rathjen worked various jobs until becoming a professional truck driver. He concluded 32 years of driving when he retired from Yellow Freight System.

He also farmed and raised Angus and Limousine cattle.

He married Evelyn Faye Haynes in February 10, 1967, in Miami. She survives, of the home.

Mr. Rathjen was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Norman and three sisters, Lenore, Christine and Vera May.

Additional survivors include two sons, James Dale and his wife Nancy Rathjen, and Steven Wayne and his wife Jamie Rathjen; a brother, Don Rathjen, and five grandchildren, Lane Allen Rathjen, Wyatt Eugene Rathjen, Ryan Wayne Rathjen, Lindsay Dawn Rathjen and Jacqueline Danyelle Rathjen.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Glen Abbey memorial Gardens in Miami. The Rev. Leland Bartlett will officiate. Pallbearers will be Bill Blaire, Earl Sherwood, Ron Hough, Gary Mathis, Tim Eslick and Ryan Rathjen. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Patterson, Cecil Knight Jr., Anderson Charles Montgomery, Victor Smith, Charles Goforth, J.L. Charles, Don McCabe, Ronnie Willis, Bert Bresee, Chris Stephens and the grandchildren.

Services are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami.
