Patrick A. “Pat” Fitzgibbon Jr, 71, passed away from cancer at his home in Miami on Saturday, June 2, 2007.
Pat, the oldest of 13 children, was born in Shawneetown, Ill., on Sept. 15, 1935, to Pat and Lila (Linder) Fitzgibbon.
As a very small child, the family moved to Bardstown, Ky., where his father operated Fitzgibbon Transportation Company. The family later moved to Chanute, Kan., and lived on a ranch for several years.
Pat graduated from Chanute High School in 1952 and later proudly served his country as a gunner's mate in the U.S. Navy, traveling to 26 countries on a destroyer and The Franklin D. Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier. Pat came to Miami in 1958 where his family had settled.
Pat met his wife, Joyce Collins, in Miami and they were married on June 4, 1960, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Pat was self employed in trucking until 1990, worked at Eagle Picher for 10 years and Westco, Inc. until his illness forced his retirement in March, 2007.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three children, Carol Ann in 1961, Joseph Patrick in 1968, and Janice Marie in 1997. Survivors include: wife Joyce of the home, son and his wife, Ed and Jill Fitzgibbon of Miami; a daughter and her husband, Janie and Greg Giles of Tahlequah; three grandsons, Matt and Seth Giles and Patrick Fitzgibbon all of Tahlequah; six brothers and their families; Joe, Edmond, Okla.; Michael, Miami, Okla.; John, Webb City, Mo.; Terry, Tulsa, Okla.; Mark, Tulsa.; and Dennis, Broken Arrow, Okla.; six sisters, Nancy Wagner, Miami, Okla.; Lila Scott, Mesa, Ariz.; Mary Jane James, Webb City, Mo.; Kathleen Schertz, Miami, Okla.; Noreen Pendergraft, Webb City, Mo.; and Ann Roblyer, Miami, Okla.; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ron Collins, Jim Winton, Larry Edmondson, Pat Brazil, Dale Scott and Terry James. Grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. at Cooper-Althouse Funeral Home on Monday, June 4, 2007, followed by visitation from 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Miami. Burial will be at G.A.R. Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Heaven and Earth Hospice.
