Alvin J. “Big Al” Eastep, 85 of Pittsburg, Kan., died Saturday Nov. 11, 2007, at his home in Pittsburg following a sudden illness.
He was born Oct. 30, 1922, in Mindenmines, Mo., the son of Jim and Nora (Taylor) Eastep. He was a lifetime resident of the Pittsburg/Mindenmines area. He attended and was a graduate from Mindenmines schools.
Al served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He fought in Germany and was a part of the Battle of the Bulge.
He married Mary B. James on June 16, 1946, in Burgess, Mo. She preceded him in death on Aug. 25, 1996.
Al was an electrician, he taught electrical classes at Kansas State Teachers College (PSU); he was the owner/operator of Big Al's Surplus in Pittsburg.
He was a member of the Free Holiness Church in Pittsburg, a member of the International Brotherhood of Electricians, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Pittsburg American Legion.
Survivors include a daughter Cheryl Eastep of Belleville, Kan.; a special friend Patsy Lee of Miami; five grandchildren, Marlo Hiller, Melissa Brown, Jason Eastep, Kelly Youngblood and Jamie Hiller, and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son Jimmie Joe Eastep, 3 sisters and a brother.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg with the Rev. Daryl Gaddy officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
