Hazel “Dixie” Cherry died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Mantee Heights Nursing Home in Grand Junction, Colo.
Mrs. Cherry was born July 29, 1928, in Ulysses Kan. She grew up in Carbondale, Colo. She lived in Oklahoma then returned to Colorado.
She was a nurse at the local V.A. Hospital until her retirement in 1985. During her lifetime, she worked as a waitress, beautician and beauty shop owner and color technician for L’Oreal.
She was preceded in death by three husbands, Eugene Grooms, Robert Marta and Wylie Cherry; one daughter, Carolyn Rugani; her parents Melvin Elliott and Hazel Elliott Hicks; one sister, Rose Castoe, and one brother, Larry Antle.
Survivors include one son David Grooms from Plano, Texas; three brothers, Eugene Castoe of Phoenix, Ariz., Richard Elliott of Tyler, Texas, and Neil Elliott of Garden City, Kan.; four sisters, Rose Castoe of Grand Junction, Velva Prince of Fruita, Colo., Dorothy Jackson of Franklin, Idaho, and Betty Gaston of Durango, Colo.; four grandchildren, Tyler Grooms, Marcus Grooms, Leah Rugani and Jules Rugani, and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction.
