Portia L. Nowell of Chetopa, Kan., died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after an illness.
She was 90.
Mrs. Nowell was born July 29, 1917, in Drumright to Bert and Elizabeth (Lowen) Swisher.
After graduating from high school, she attended Hills Business College in Oklahoma City.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Ladies' Auxillary of Welch. She and her husband owned and operated M.J. Nowell Liquor Store from 1950 until 1975.
She married Marvin Nowell on May 25, 1945, in Columbus, Kan. He preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Wanda Seigel; her parents, three brothers and one sister.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary E. Simpson of Chetopa and Marva J. Pogue of Miami; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
The body was cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date.
