JoAn Taylor was born in Miami, Okla., on Jan. 3, 1919, to Fannie Lou (White) and James Henry Taylor and died on May 16, 2009, at the age of 90. Ms. Taylor lived in Miami, graduated with the class of 1936 at Miami High School and worked with her father at Taylor’s Insurance & Realty Agency until 1955. She then moved to Tulsa, Okla., and worked in both insurance and banking. In 1984, Ms. Taylor retired from the Bank of Oklahoma after 15 years of service. She then returned to Miami and remained there until her death where she enjoyed the company of her family. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Calico Quilters, Miami Lioness Club, and Friends of the Coleman.
Ms. Taylor was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Joy Ellen (Taylor) Mabon, Wilton Ellis Taylor and James Clifford “Gob” Taylor; her niece Fannie Lou (Mabon) Elliott and her nephew Dale Taylor Mabon.
She is survived by her niece, Jane (Mabon) Osborn, Miami, Okla., and nephews Dwight Taylor, Tulsa, Okla., and Jim Taylor, Winter Park, Fla., as well as 49 great-nieces and nephews spanning three more generations. Ms. Taylor loved to share family history and over the years was blessed to do so with many generations of her parent’s descendants.
Leon Weece will officiate at a memorial service on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the First Christian Church, Miami, with burial in G.A.R. Cemetery. The body will lie in state at Paul Thomas Funeral Home today. Suggestions for donations are: Class of 1936 Charles Banks Wilson Scholarship at the NEO Foundation, Friends of the Coleman and First Christian Church.
