Howard Leroy Payton of Jay died Sunday, June 10, 2007, following a battle with cancer. He was 69.

Mr. Payton was born Oct. 8, 1937, in Deerlick to Cecil Payton and Ella Mae (Chrisman) Payton. He attended school through the eighth grade.

He was a Vietnam War veteran of the Army.

He operated a welding shop from 1978 to 1987 before becoming a Delaware County commissioner in 1987 and serving in that position until his death. He was a member of Faith Mission Church of Jay, a Tribal member of the Cherokee Nation and a member of the American Legion of Jay.

Survivors include one son, Cary Payton of Jay; one sister, Freda Bushthead of Grove, and three brothers, Ed Payton of Miami, Bob Payton of Claremore and Donny Payton of North Platt, Neb.

He was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, his parents and one sister.

Services will be 2 p.m. today at the Assembly of God Church with pastor Chester Crittendon officiating. Burial will be in Duffield Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Grove Veterans Ritual Team.
