A truck driver died when his truck ran off Interstate 44 Wednesday evening and struck a tree head-on.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Troy Gillmore said at 7:24 p.m. Wednesday the truck driver was eastbound on I-44 in his Volvo truck when eight miles east of Miami the truck left the roadway on the right. It then traveled about 150 feet before striking the embankment, causing it to go airborne for another 30 feet. The truck then went through a fence and traveled another 100 feet before striking a tree head-on. The truck then caught fire and exploded.
Gillmore said the driver was pinned in the truck for three hours and 37 minutes. The Miami Fire Department's firefighters used the Sawzall to extricate the driver from the truck.
The driver died at the scene, Gillmore said, from massive head, internal and external body injuries as well as arm and leg injuries. The OHP has not released the name of the driver pending notification of his next of kin.
Gillmore said the cause of the accident is unknown.
