The search is on for the child who will grace the front cover of the 2009 Miami News-Record N.I.E. “Baby of the Year” calendar. The success of last year's calendar exceeded the expectations of News-Record publisher Shannon Duhon who hopes to offer even more funding to local educators next spring. Proceeds from the calendar benefit Newspaper in Education - an international program created to advance the use of newspapers in the classroom.
Entries are open to children ages 3 years and under who reside in Ottawa, Craig or Delaware counties. To keep the calendar's content fresh for next year and encourage more families to participate, children who were featured in the 2008 edition are not eligible to participate; however, their siblings, ages 3 and under, are welcome. Complete entry details appear in a full-page advertisement elsewhere in this edition.
The 13 children who receive the most “votes” will be featured in the calendar. The toddler who receives the most votes is featured on the cover and is crowned “Baby of the Year”. Last year's winner was Annie Chuckluck, who received a $500 savings bond.
Readers will have an entire month this year to vote, starting Oct. 1. All children who are entered will appear in that issue of the News-Record and periodically throughout the month as votes are tabulated. The revenue from all entry fees and votes are earmarked for the N.I.E. program. This year, 15 area teachers each received a check for $200.
The 2009 calendar will appear in the December 31st issue of the News-Record. The children will be professionally photographed by Jimmy Sexton Photography.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our area children and raise money for a deserving educational program,” said Mark Rogers, News-Record advertising director.
