Veterans of World War II and the Korean War will gather today at the Miami Civic Center as the News-Record launches “Operation Remember.”

The project, a comprehensive effort to identify area veterans and document their war-time experiences, began last month with a request for Veterans of World War II and the Korean War to assemble at 6 p.m. today in the Miami Civic Center ballroom.

Miami Mayor Brent Brassfield is scheduled to address the veterans shortly after they gather.

News-Record staff members will register veterans, take group photographs and set dates to interview the veterans for an upcoming publication dedicated to their honor.

A second phase of “Operation Remember” is expected to launch in January. At that time, the News-Record will announce a call for all Vietnam Veterans and repeat the archiving efforts.

World War II veterans and Korean War veterans who are unable to attend today's event are asked to contact Krista Duhon or Bonnie Nielsen at the News-Record to submit their names to the archive and arrange for an interview.

To reach the News-Record by phone, call 918-542-5533.

E-mails regarding the project should be sent to news.staff@miaminewsrecord.com with the words “veterans” in the subject line.
