Family and friends are mourning the loss of a 4-year-old Afton boy who drowned Saturday in the family pool.
Delaware County authorities say the boy was swimming with several family members at their rural Afton home when, unbeknownst to the family, he removed his flotation devices from his arms.
“Family members began looking for the boy at which time an adult male saw him at the bottom of the pool,” said Daniel Wade Thompson with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.
According to authorities, the boy was pulled from the pool and CPR was administered until Afton first responders arrived and took over the boy's emergency care. He was airlifted to Freeman Hospital in Joplin where he later died.
Authorities have not released the name of the victim.
