An Ottawa County man charged with shooting at two Miami police officers was taken into custody at a Grove hospital, said Bob Ernst, Ottawa County undersheriff on Tuesday.

Kevin Eugene Brownfield, 38, of Miami surrendered to authorities without incident around 5 p.m. on Monday, he said. He is charged in Ottawa County District Court with shooting a police officer with intent to kill.

He remains in jail on a $500,000 bail, Ernst said.

“He (Brownfield) was released from the Joplin jail and for some reason traveled to Oklahoma where he was arrested,” Ernst said.

Brownfield had been hospitalized since April 13 in a Joplin, Mo., hospital after he was shot in the stomach and the hip by Miami Officers Michael Brashers and Richard Cummings for refusing to drop his gun and surrender to authorities, an arrest affidavit states. The officers were responding to a domestic violence when Brashers reportedly fired at Brownfield after Brownfield pointed a shotgun at him, hitting his left arm, records state.

Brashers was treated at a hospital and released.
