The director of the 13th Judicial District Drug Task Force has issued a notice to residents that a new scam is circulating.
Chris Morris said a “jury duty scam” has been verified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and it has been identified in nearly a dozen states, including Oklahoma.
“Most of us take summons for jury duty seriously,” Morris said. “But, enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced.”
Morris said the caller claims to be a jury coordinator and will ask the targeted victim to verify their Social Security number and date of birth so that the caller can cancel an arrest warrant issued for failure to respond to an alleged summons for duty.
“Give out the the information and, bingo, your identity has been stolen,” Morris said.
The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their Web sites to warn customers of the potential fraud attempt.
