Marcia Johnson, administrative librarian for the Miami Public Library has been named manager of the year by the city of Miami.
Johnson was hired by the city in August, 2002. She has a master’s degree in Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma a master’s degree in education from SWMSU, Missouri and a bachelor’s degree in education from MSSC, Missouri.
Johnson was recognized during the Miami City Council Meeting on Monday.
City Manager, Huey Long described Johnson as being “The best of the best.”
In her remarks to those attending the meeting, Johnson said, “The library was my favorite place to go as a child and then growing up and getting to work there was…” she finished the sentence with a smile.
Johnson said the best thing about her job was, “being able to order books.” She said if she were given a blank check she would use it to buy more space.
“We are desperately needing more space,” said Johnson. “We have moved our reference books to the basement and patrons do not always have access due to lack of staff.”
Johnson said the library will be offering computer classes in February.
“I am always interested in suggestions from patrons on how to improve the library,” said Johnson.
The library is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Friday and Saturday; 1-5 p.m., Sunday.
Library cards are free to Ottawa county residents.
