When the rains came to Ottawa County several months ago bringing massive flooding and hopelessness to victims, runners were likely not thinking of their sport - but, they are now.
With the goal of helping those flood victims, area runners are anticipating the inaugural Green Country Benefit 5K Run to be held Oct. 20, in Miami.
The 5K Run and a one-mile walk will be sponsored by Integris Baptist Regional Health Center and the Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau, according to Amanda Davis, program director of the visitors bureau. “All proceeds will benefit the Ottawa County Flood Relief Fund,” Davis said.
The race is sanctioned by USA Track and Field, said Michele Bolton, director of the race and employed by BRHC.
“This is a great opportunity to get some exercise while supporting flood victims in our area who are still in need of help,” Bolton said.
The race will begin at 9 a.m. Registration for both the walk and run is from 7 to 8:45 a.m. at the Miami Physicians Clinic, 30 B Street SW.
Cost is $25. Pre-registration, at $20, is encouraged, with forms available at www.integrisbaptistregional.com
The registration fee for students attending middle and high school is $10. Children 14 and under can participate in the fun walk free of charge.
Pre-registrations must be postmarked by Friday or dropped off at the Miami Area Chamber of Commerce office by Oct. 17, Davis said. All pre-registered participants receive a T-shirt and goodie bag. Participants registering the day of the event will receive the perks while supplies last, she explained.
Awards will be presented to winners following the race, and all participants will be eligible for numerous door prizes donated by local businesses.
