STROUD, Okla. (AP) — A famed Route 66 landmark has reopened in northeastern Oklahoma, a year after a devastating fire nearly leveled it.
A fire on May 20, 2007, ripped through the Rock Cafe, leaving its stone walls blackened but standing. On Friday, customers lined up again at the rebuilt restaurant, eating food off the grill that had been salvaged after the fire.
The grill has been in use since 1939, when builders erected the rock walls and opened the cafe to feed hungry travelers along the storied highway. The cafe has been a Route 66 landmark ever since.
Owner Dawn Welch says she's ecstatic that the restaurant has reopened.
Welch served as the inspiration for the character Sally Carrera, a talking blue Porsche in the 2006 animated movie "Cars."
